When I was suffering from burnout, it used to confuse me that I could get a good 8 hours of sleep a night, but still feel totally exhausted.
Surely with that much sleep I should be jumping out of bed in the morning and be ready to go and seize the day? But instead, I would wake up feeling so tired, and in fact like I’d not slept at all. And I seemed to feel like this no matter how much I slept!
And then I came across the work of Dr Saundra Dalton-Smith who talks about the different types of rest all human beings need in order to fully recharge their batteries, and it was revolutionary to me!
I realised that physical rest was only one type of rest we needed, and actually I was severely lacking in some of the other types of rest, which explained why I was still feeling completely drained. It was clear that I needed to tune into which rest areas I was neglecting, and prioritise these. And sure enough, after a little while, I began to feel so much better and I noticed my energy levels increase. It was such a relief!
And so, as we head into summer, I am running a workshop all about getting the right type of rest. This season tends to be surprisingly busy as we juggle work and an increase in social events - whether that be festivals, weekends away, weddings, or trying to keep the kids entertained during their summer break!
I’ll be sharing more about the different types of rest we need, as well as helping you to identify which rest areas might need some more attention to help you feel like you can thrive this summer, and really enjoy it.
